CF VILANOVA 0-1 UE CORNELLÀ (PLAYOFF)

The Greens strike first.

Cornellà secured a narrow victory over CF Vilanova in the first leg of the opening promotion playoff round to Segunda Federación. Marc Fernández’s goal early in the second half gave the Greens an advantage ahead of the return leg at the Nou Municipal.

The game plan worked perfectly. Ignasi Senabre’s men, aware that a tie is neither won nor lost in the first leg, delivered a serious and highly disciplined performance. The home side, controlling possession, created very little danger in Isaac’s area. Our team remained well organised, solid and largely untroubled.

The reward came right at the start of the second half. In one of the first attacking moves, Marc Fernández found the net with a cross from the flank that was deflected by a Vilanova defender into his own goal.

From that point on, it was a phase of control and composure for our side, who even had the chance to extend the lead with a powerful effort from Santi Guzmán that went narrowly wide. The hosts also pushed for a reaction, and there were moments in which Cornellà had to dig deep to protect a valuable result.

Next Sunday in Cornellà, the return leg awaits.
